Czechoslovakia Kralik Vaseline Uranium Glass Water Set-Art Deco Bohemian Marked
SOLD $695.00 Sold: Aug 19, 2023 on eBayOriginal Listing Description
The Wilhelm Kralik Sohn Glass company of Czechoslovakia had a very rich history, originally founded in 1815 by Josef Meyr. Over the many years the company produced wonderful works of art, contributing to the history and art glass trade throughout the 19th century. The firm created a number of interesting styles and shapes many of which are collected today. Due to the start of World War I, many studios in this region suffered financially, at the end of the war, this region known as Bohemia became part Czechoslovakia. During the 1920’s-early 30’s, the Kralik company continued to produce fine glass for export, one style used uranium glass as a base with colored threading and canes as accents. A very difficult group to find in this line is the water set including a water pitcher and accompanying tumblers. All but one tumbler have the acid etched name I believe these pieces dates from the 1920s into the early 1930s. It exhibits an art deco form with irregular yellow and orange shapes encased in the off yellow base color clear glass. The orange threads appear fused to the outside surface as they can be felt when the items are handled. As two pictures reveal, this set reacts brilliantly in the presence of UV light. The pitcher measures 8 1/2” tall and 7” from spout to back of handle. The body of the pitcher measures approximately 6” diameter. The tumblers measure from 5 1/4” to 5 3/8” tall and between 3 1/16” to 3 1/8” across the top. I am not sure why the slight difference in height and diameter of the top, my suspect is possibly two of the tumblers could have been ground slightly shorter either at the factory or post factory. This is a minor issue mentioned for accuracy, this is the original condition in which I purchased this set. I can find no significant chips, cracks, damage or repairs to either the pitcher or any of the tumblers. I see no staining or residue on the inside of any examples due to use. I will mention for accuracy some extremely minute roughness on the rims of the tumblers due to the grinding process at production. This is normal for this type of glass from this era. Due to the size and value, this group will be double boxed, shipped either UPS or FedEx ground, fully insured at a fixed price. Please view all pictures as they are considered part of the description. Please check back to my listings often as I will be posting numerous fine examples of glass, pottery and porcelain in the near future. Thank you. (Condition: Pre-Owned)
